Emergency Preparedness For Pets

Pet Safety
Disasters, whether natural or man-made, can happen to any town or
family. Pets are often unfortunate victims in these scenarios. Yet many families do not consider what might become of their animals during these hectic moments. As with the human family members, it's best
to make sure that an pet emergency plan is also in place for those furry
loved ones.
Pet Identification
The first thing any pet owner should do is to equip their cat or dog with
some sort of identification, usually in the form of secure collar. Make
sure that as much information is on there as possible. While pet names
are useful, mobile and home phone numbers are essential. Nowadays, with
the microchip technology available, many owners are taking that extra
step to keep track of their pets at all times.
Emergency Kits
Just as there is a family human emergency kit, there should be a pet emergency kit. These should include medical care items such as medication and all health records, including veterinarian contacts. There should also be a supply of pet food and water, as well as materials for taking care of animal waste, such as kitty litter and plastic bags.
Shelter Arrangements
The last thing anyone wants is to be forced to leave their pets behind. Who can forget those heart-breaking images of stranded dogs and cats after Katrina? Make arrangements with trusted neighbors or relatives who have all of your contact info and take in a pet if necessary. Have on hand contact information for all of the local shelters and pet hotels, in case you need to drop your pet off. That is what they are there for.
Be Prepared
Most people treat their pets with the same love and care they do any other family member. Surely, it would be devastating to lose them if a disaster did occur. When all it takes is a small amount of time for proper planning, there is no excuse to be unprepared.
